Charms Lesson One Empty
PostSubject: Charms Lesson One   Charms Lesson One EmptySun Jan 16, 2011 10:31 pm

Setting up his classroom had been a breeze and smiling as he made the final touch, Christopher smiled to himself. This should be an interesting lesson. Most professors he knew started out with the levitation charm. No one ever claimed that Chris followed procedure. Waving his wand he banished the desks with an experienced air. Going to the door, he opened it and ushered the children inside.

Terry looked around the classroom, still sucking on her Acid Pop form DADA. She was the first one there, and there were no desks. Looking around for a box of candy, she failed in her quest. Shrugging, she waited for class to start and wondered if Dree or Sami had Charms too.

Sami skipped happily to the Charms classroom. DADA had gone reasonably good for her, and she hoped the next class would too. Stepping in through the door, she noticed that her and Ri were the only students that had shown so far but paid no mind to it. There were no desks in the room either.

Weird, Sami thought. Two classes in a row without sitting or comfortable seats.

She stood next to Ri, not wanting to have to work with a complete stranger. Familiarity was something the girl liked working with. Gripping her eleven inch wand, she stood back and waited for the rest of the class to file in.

Essi slipped into the classroom. She realised that for once she wasn't first in, and she was kind of relieved about that. Sami and Terry were already inside, and Essi stood beside them. She looked around the classroom and noticed that it was a little like the defence against the dark arts classroom because the desks were pushed away, but unlike that classroom it didn't have sweets on the desk.

She waited for the lesson to start, desperate to try her hand at charms. She wasn't great at transfiguration, but she hoped that she'd do well in this class.

She wondered what they were going to do in the first lesson, and she wondered when the other people were going to arrive.

She shuffled her feet impatiently.

Vanessa found her way to her Charms class just fine. She had, after all, done a thorough exploration of the castle and grounds before.
When she entered she saw three other girls already there;ready for the class to begin. She recognized Terry as the girl that had fallen off a tree and gotten a terrible concussion and Sami as the slightly intimidating girl that had been next to Dree. The other girl, however, did seem slightly familiar and she wondered where she had seen the girl before.
Taking cautious steps forward, Vanessa made her way to the back of the classroom. "Silent and unnoticeable" was her motto. From back there, she would be able to observe without beig observed herself.
She looked nervously around her. With any luck, this lesson would be a success, and would prove to her that she did belong in this world of witches and wizards.
She put her bag down next to her on the floor; she was ready to begin.

Alyssa entered the Charms classroom, unusually happy. Lyss supposed it was the fact that she had just eaten a candy bar. She sat down near Terry and greeted her with a wave. Pulling out her textbook, quill, and a sheet of parchment, she waited eagerly for someone else to walk in.

Sydney entered his Charms class in a half-sprint. He had almost been late!
He had just learned how enormous Hogwarts really was. It would take all his skill to not get lost anymore.
He noted with mild curiosity that there were no chairs or desks in this classroom, and that whatever the teacher was planning on doing was bound to be interesting.
"Hey everyone. I'm Sydney," he introduced himself to no one in particular. He recognized the Gryffindor that was gonna be his next project, but decided against standing next to her. He wouldn't like to freak her out so early into the year. He could wait. He could be patient.
Instead, he decided upon leaning against the wall with his bookbag thrown unceremoniously on the floor. Let the class begin.

Pierre panted slightly as he skidded to a stop next to another Hufflepuff boy, waving slightly at his cousin, who was sucking happily on an Acid Pop. She's always been a strange one.... He thought, amused by the antics he had heard about from other students that Terry had indulged herself in. Following the boy's lead of leaning against the wall, he tried to catch his breath, straightening his uniform so he didn't look like a ruffian to the teacher. Placing his Italian leather bag on the floor carefully, he nodded to the Hufflepuff boy before turning his attention to the front while taking out his wand.

Sydney noticed when a tall foreign-looking Hufflepuff boy nearly ran into the wall next to him.
He seemed interesting enough, so Sydney nodded back at the boy when he also leaned against the wall; almost looking like a mobster with his serious face and demeanor.
When the boy took out his wand, he almost freaked until he realized it was not pointed at him. That would not have been pleasant at all.
Suddenly remembering his own, he followed suit in taking his wand from his robe's pocket and turned it around and around in his hand. It would be awhile before he would get used to having it in his hand.

PostSubject: Re: Charms Lesson One   Charms Lesson One EmptyTue Jan 18, 2011 1:15 am

Leighton walked into the Charms classroom, her arms folded over her chest and her wand clutched in her right hand. She was excited about Charms, it seemed like it was going to be a pretty interesting class.
Leigh noticed Essi, the girl she found hiding behind the suit of armor, but didn't approach her. In fact, Leighton stayed by herself. Not only was she a Slytherin (apparently people didn't like the Slytherins too much), but she also had a 'horrid' American accent. Top that off with scary and creepy eyes, that made her an automatic outcast. Perhaps people will like me because I'm a pureblood, Leighton thought hopefully. But, the American thing sort of cancelled that one out.
Rolling her eyes at her own lack of confidence, Leigh tilted her head slightly to the side and waited for the teacher to begin his lesson.

Kyra entered the Charms classroom, looking for a place to sit. Not wanting to seem too eager, but not wanting to seem lazy and rude, she settled for the third row. She took out her parchment, quills, and book. She picked one of the feather pens up and hunched over her desk. This would surely be a lesson worth learning. The teacher looked a bit strict, but not nearly as much as Professor Hamilton.

Entering the room, Alli was almost immediately stunned by the peculiar sight of two girls who appeared to be doing squats in the middle of the classroom. Obviously the professor had removed the desks, so it was apparently by some miracle that they were sitting at a desk that did not exist and being "studious". Who did they think they were fooling? She couldn't wait to have a laugh about it with Jasmine later.

Nodding at his students as they entered, Christopher arched a brow at seeing a few students who looked to be under some illusion charm to believe there were desks in the classroom. Shouldn't they have found it odd that their books had fallen to the floor and that they weren't really sitting on chairs? How odd.

Making a mental note to keep those children after class to find out how they had come upon that odd affliction, he moved on. Clearing his throat and smiling at the rest of the class he began.

"I know that by now most of you have noticed there are no desks. That is because I am not going to be teaching you the levitation charm. Well, not yet." Christopher had a much better idea than levitating feathers when he did that charm. "Today we shall be learning Lumos. It is a basic Charm and very useful. We will also be learning Nox. Another basic spell."

Looking at his kids, Christopher pointed at the boy that had come in and taken his wand out. Very sharp lad. "You, Mr. Korsten," he recalled from the roster. "Please inform the class why you felt the need to take your wand as soon as you came into the class?"

"Well, obviously since it is Charms, then won't we need wands, sir?" Pierre asked, holding back a smile. It was an obvious action and answer. "Unless you were thinking of doing some introduction circle, which you were not, then we need our wands to learn the spell."

He smirked, satisfied with his answer. How had others not thought of that? It was Charms after. Deciding Professor Smith was a good Professor, Pierre waited for the lesson to begin.

Terry rolled her eyes at her cousin as she took out her own wand. Pierre just had to be his sarcastic self. But, he did have a point. Terry should have thought of that on her own. Wrapping the acid pop in its wrapper and putting it in her bag, she waited for the lesson to actually begin.

Idly noticing a few girls- Essi, Alyssa and a Hufflepuff girl who were squatting in the air, she wondered idly if they were slightly crazy.

That might explain plenty.

Gwen rushed into the room and tripped over something causing her to almost fall on the girl in front of her,
"Sorry Professor. I won´t be late again!" She ssmiled pushing her enormous bag to the side and smiling. She was quite interested in charms. She looked around to see some confused faces and wondered why there were no desks and why Berty looked like she was thinking about something confusing.

Emily saw Gwen enter the classroom slightly ahead of her, she was glad she wasn’t the only one who was late. “I’m sorry professor” she said quickly before taking a seat. She had gotten lost, again. She really need to get to know the castle better. This was the second time it had happened, she hoped it would be the last.

PostSubject: Re: Charms Lesson One   Charms Lesson One EmptyTue Jan 18, 2011 8:10 pm

"Very good Mr. Korsten." Christopher smiled at the boy, glad to know he had at least one fellow who took the subject seriously. "It is always best to be prepared. You are wizards and witches. Even if you weren't wouldn't your common sense tell you something was amiss seeing no desks?"

It was good this wasn't the DADA classroom. Most of his students would have failed their first class. Bringing his hands together he then spread them out to gesture at the empty classroom. "Today we are going to play a game in order to learn the spells I mentioned. You might think it's childish, but you are children and even us adults like to act like children every now and then."

Pulling out his wand and flicking it he clearly stated, "Lumos."

The wand tip lit up casting light in a four foot area. "This is Lumos. It can be found in your books. Add enough heat and you can even burn paper with it like you can with a light bulb. For those who don't know what a light bulb is, it's a muggle devised used to make light instead of Lumos."

Flicking his wand again he did the counter spell and the light went out. "Nox. It can also be found in your books. I want you each to be able to use both spells before we play this game. And an extra five points (galleons) to the one who thinks they know what the game is."

Leighton raised an eyebrow. She knew what Lumos was, her brother and now her teacher had told her so. Leigh studied Greek and Latin words back at her old Muggle school. She learned that Nox meant night. So, Nox must be the counter-curse to Lumos.
Leigh didn't know what the game was, but it could be like tag. Where one or more people could use to the Nox spell and try to put out the Lumos charm. It didn't seem like the right answer but Leighton said it anyway. "I know this is probably the wrong answer, but could we be playing a game like tag? Like how one person is it and has to put out everyone else's Lumos'?" Leighton pondered, her American accent clashing with all the proper English ones.

Pointing at the Slytherin who spoke up, Christopher nodded. "Exactly, Ms. Vladimir. 5 points (Galleons) to you!"

Eyes sweeping his class making sure that he made eye contact with every one of them, the man stated, "When you all have practiced and are able to use both spells we shall begin our game."

It wise nice having magic at times. Like now, Christopher couldn't wait for his kids to get the spells down so they could play their game. He'd put a temporary darkness spell in the room, or he could just use some of that Darkness Powder he'd confiscated off a student....

"Please begin and don't hesitate to ask any questions."

Pierre flicked his wand, "Lumos." he said, thinking about making light. The tip glowed briefly before dying. "Dang it...Lumos!" he repeated, this time with more vigor. Light came, and this time it stayed. "Nox," he said, flicking it once again. Nothing happened. Nox took Pierre several more tries, until he finally got it right.

He repeated the process several more times before he thought he had it down pretty well. Smirking, he watched the rest of the class with amusement.

Glaring at Pierre, Lyss was filled with determination. "Lumos," she muttered quietly, a small match-sized flame appearing for a moment. Upon her second try, it glowed longer and bigger. By her fourth, she felt confident her flame was a fair size. Nox only took her twice. Practicing it a few more times, Lyss was confident that she had a good charm, at least as good as Pierre's. Watching the rest of the class, she noticed half of them were still struggling. That made Lyss feel good.

Terry glared at Alyssa competitively before turning to her own wand. "Lumos!" she said with lots of vigor. She shrieked as a very powerful light emitted from her wand. Squeezing her eyes closed, she flicked it again before saying, "Nox." Nothing happened. "Nox!" she said, with even more vigor than her Lumos. The light diminished immediately.

She tried Lumos again, this time without as much vigor. Nox didn't take as long as Lumos, which took her around a dozen times, Nox only six times.

PostSubject: Re: Charms Lesson One   Charms Lesson One EmptyTue Jan 18, 2011 11:18 pm

Running to his last class of the day, Peter skidded to a stop outside the Charms classroom. Seeing that the class was already underway, the boy slipped in and watched what was going on around him. He frowned at a fellow Ravenclaw, a girl and quickly stepped away from her. Shaking his head he went to his own corner and pulled his wand. Taking a couple breaths he knew he wouldn't get it the first time. That would have taken a miracle! Or beginner's luck. Something Peter didn't believe in.

Looking at those that were getting their wand tips to light up, Peter mimicked their movements wordlessly saying the spell. When he was sure he got it down, he tried it himself. "Lumos!"

When nothing happened he didn't give up but tried again. This time he imagined he was holding a flashlight. When he said the word lumos, he pictured his thumb flipping the switch. "Lumos!"

Smirking in satisfaction when it lit up, he now tried to turn it off. "Nox."

Hmmm, no dice. Maybe...

PostSubject: Re: Charms Lesson One   Charms Lesson One EmptyWed Jan 19, 2011 12:28 am

Leighton rolled her eyes at all the competition in the room. Not that Leighton could blame them though, winning was nice. She wouldn't have minded winning a competition of her own if there was anyone to compete with. That was partly why she was bitter about other people battling it out like that.
Leighton held her wand, liking the feeling of it under her fingertips. She knew that Lumos would come easy to her; her brother taught her to do it with his wand. It was interesting that even though his wand was foreign and didn't really like Leighton it still let her do simple charms on it. Leigh could only imagine all the spells she could do with her own wand.
Leigh outstretched her hand and murmured "Lumos," quietly. As she expected, the tip of her wand glew brightly and illuminated the area around her. Leighton preformed the spell a few more times, with each time the light getting a little bit brighter.
After about five or six Lumos practices, Leighton decided it was time to try th Nox charm. "Nox," she stated.
To her utmost disappointment, her wand still glowed a vibrant white color, telling her that her Nox charm hadn't worked. "Nox," she all but growled at her wand. The light died down to a subtle glow, but nonetheless, it still wasn't working.
Leighton drew in a deep breathe and gripped the wand tighter, a determined expression on her face. "Nox," Leigh said again.
This time, the light on her wand was completely gone leaving Leighton very pleased. Leighton tried the Lumos charm than the Nox charm over and over again until she felt comfortable using this charm in the game they were about to play.
