Lavender sat on the sofa in the Parkinson household living room, her mother was sat opposite in her arm chair. Violet Parkinson had called Lavender to the living room, thought she didn't know why. As Lavender began to slouch her mother straighten herself up before saying.
"Sit up straight!" Lavender did as she was told immediately.
"Sorry, Mother," She muttered with a frown, looking down into her lap. What was this going to be about, she wondered. Mrs Parkinson stood from her arm chair gracefully before taking out her wand and pointing it at the living room door.
"Colloportus," The door closed sharply and looked itself, causing Lavender to stare in awe. "Now, unlock it." Mrs Parkinson ordered blankly as she lowered her wand. "And close your mouth, you are not a dog," She added with a glare in her daughters direction. You had to be cruel to be kind.
"I can't," Lavender looked from her mother to the door then back to her mother. Feeling like a failure, she hated it when her mother did that. Made her feel bad for things she didn't have control over and couldn't help.
"Why not?" Mrs Parkinson asked, though she knew perfectly well why. Her daughter was different to the rest of their family, so was her brother. Though Lavender more so.
"I don't know how," Lavender stated, wondering why her mother was asking when she probably knew.
"Oh yes," There was silence as Mrs Parkinson made her way over to the door. "Come here," She beckoned her daughter over and Lavender reluctantly stood and made her way over, keeping her back straight "Get out your want," Mrs Parkinson pointed to the boot Lavender was wearing on her right foot, where she knew the girl stored her wand. Lavender did as she was told. "Say Alohamora, then flick your wrist like this," The older woman demostrated a flicking motion which her daughter watched intently. Lavender pointed her wand at the doors lock, taking in a deep breath.
"Aloamora," She then flicked her wrist as her mother had. There was a quiet click and Mrs Parkinson lent over to try the door knob. It didn't open.
"It's AloHAmora. You didn't pronounce the 'h'," Mrs Parkinson corrected her daughter, not surprised she didn't get it first time. Excalibur had. Lavender noded, listening to her mother direction before pointing her wand again.
"Alohamora," She flicked her wrist like she had before, assuming she'd done it right the first time because her mother hadn't corrected her on that. The door clicked once more, a little louder this time and her mother proceeded to lean over and try the door knob as she had the first time. It still didn't open.
"Again," Mrs Parkinson crossed her arms, how long was this going to take. Lavender pointed her wand again, determined to get it this time. Not for her mother, but for herself.
"Alohamora!" She almost yelled at the door, flicking her wrist sharply. Taking her annoyance out on the spell. There was a loud click this time and Mrs Parkinson lent over and opened the door.
"Good," She said simply. "Well done," With that Mrs Parkinson left the room. Leaving Lavender standing in front of the open door. At least she'd got a well done. Sometimes her mother was nice to her, but today evidently wasn't one of those times.
