Thomas nodded to himself slightly as he took out his wand. He was going to try and learn Relashio, it seemed a really basic charm, but he had a feeling it would come in handy at some point, so he had decided he would do his best to try and learn it. His mum had been busy though, but she had recommended he search for one of the other teachers, and found the Astronomy Teacher, Professor Burke, had agreed. She put up the basic instructions on the board, the name of the spell and it's effects, while the Professor held a long cylinder of metal in her hand.
She explained to him that the aim was for him to be able to use the charm to make her let go of the metal rod. He nodded after it had been explained, and took a few steps back so he was at a better difference. Once he had done that, he pointed his wand at the Professor, chanting “Relashio!” Only for him to find that nothing had happened. He knew he wasn't going to get it right easily, especially since he had tried this once before, so he didn't let himself get rattled. He took a deep breath, going over the pronunciation and wand movement in his head. “Relashio!” He said again, and saw a few feeble red sparks emit from his wand, only to fall onto the carpet almost directly next to him.
Thomas attempted this a few more times, getting almost identical results, before the Professor suggested he say the word with more force, and aim right for the metal cylinder, rather than just the Professors general area. He nodded, and pointed his wand again, trying his best to take much better aim towards the professors hand. “Relashio!” he said again, putting more mental force and will behind the word, and let out a grin as there was a small jet of red sparks, and they fell just short of the professors hand. She said that Thomas had almost gotten it, and to just try to put a little more force behind the word, and reminding him to use a sharp jabbing motion as he said the words. He nodded again, pointing his wand firmly in the direction of the teachers hand, he closed his eyes and thought as much as he could of the cylinder dropping onto her hand and rolling on the carpet. He opened them and chanted “Relashio!” Putting as much mental force behind the word as he could, which left him without a bit of energy, but he hardly minded, seeing as the Professor dropped the metal cylinder and it rolled right towards him.
The teacher commended him good job, and said that to practice it underwater would be the next step, but that firstly he needed to be more proficient at doing it without the water being there to interfere with the forces. He nodded, passing the metal cylinder back to the professor, who held it tightly in her hand as before. It still took a couple of times, but Thomas managed to make the Professor drop the cylinder. He grinned slightly, knowing you were getting better at a spell was always good news. He wondered how he they would demonstrate the spell underwater, seeing as Thomas had no idea how to stay underwater for very long without him needing to breathe. He focused on getting stronger with the spell on dry land though, and after he had got it out of the Professors hand twice, each time needing one incantation only, the professor said they would try it underwater, but that would be best to wait for a later date. He had better mastery of it, but he wasn't completely perfect with it yet. Thomas himself felt like at least two of those three times were complete flukes. Plus, it was getting late, so the Professor told him they could always learn another day, but today wouldn't be enough time. Thomas nodded, and started his walk down the seven floors from the Astronomy tower back to the Slytherin Dorms.
