Wandering around

It was the middle of the day and th common room had been almost empty of her fellow gryffindors. She had no idea where they all were. But that was how she fund herself wandering aimlessly around howarts. Her feet had decided the young gryffindor wanted to go outside to the lake, that was how she had found herself sitting on the grass by the edge of the lake doing nothing.

She wondered abotu goig for a swim in the lake or countinuing to walk aroung the castle a bit more, but it was far too hot to countinue walking and she felt it would lonely to go swimming by herself.

She sighed a little as the warm sunshine countinued to hit her pale skin which was gradually becoming warmer. She hoped that someone would join her at the very least then she would have someone to talk to.

Hester was exploring the castle grounds. The place was so big, it made her feel even tinier than she actually was. She passed other people out enjoying the sun and made her way down to the lake.

It was huge. So big and blue. Hester shivered involuntarily. She didn't want to think about what was lurking in it.

There was a girl there, though. Another Gryffindor, like herself. Hester wandered over to the sitting girl.

"Hey, I'm Hester," she said softly. "Who are you?"

Emily jumped a little at the voice she had been lost in a world of her own. She smiled at the girl who call herself Hester. "hey I'm Emily" she said to her fellow gryffindor. She hadn't spoken to this gryffindor before but emily liked to meet new people. Especially when they were in her own house.

"you can sit if you want" she said gesturing for the girl to sit down.

Hester smiled. Emily seemed quite friendly. She sat down beside her and stared out over the lake.

"It's so big," she breathed. Then she blushed. She hadn't realised that she had said that out loud. "All of it," she added. "Hogwarts, the lake, the forest, this whole magical world that I didn't even know existed..."

She shut up, wondering if she had revealed too much about herself. She hoped that she hadn't.

Emily simled back at the girl as she sat down. "yeah it is big" she whispered, unsure if Hester had heard her. The girl seemend nice so far, and Emily never judged anyone. Especially not her fellow gryffindors.

"your a muggleborn then? It doesn't bother me just curious is all" she said to her. She already knew the answer, or she was pretty sure she did. She took a starnd of her long curly brown hair and twisted it roound her finger. It was a bad habbit the younge gryffindor had.

A muggle born. Someone who was born to a non magical family. Hester had had to get her head around that idea.

"Yeah I am," she said, almost proudly. She didn't care that some people here had been exposed to magic all of their lives. She was a fast learner, and she was friendly and outgoing. And she was taking more classes than most of the pure bloods. She was happy with her position.

"You're pure blood, then? Or half blood?" she asked. She guessed pure blood, because they were the ones who seemed to ask the 'blood status' question the most.

This didn't make her dislike them, though. It was probably, she thought, the same as someone asking where abouts you'd been born, or something like that, anyway. If you then disliked them because of it, you could be considered racist, or 'blood-ist' - she giggled at the knew word she had created- but if you weren't prejudiced then it was an innocent question.

Emily smiled at the gryffindor, it honestly didn't bother her. No matter how hard her parents had tried to put in her head there views on muggles and muggle borns. Emily didn't agree with them infact a lot of the time she hated to admit she was a pure blood.

"I'm a pureblood, i dont care about blood status or anything just curious" she bit her lip hoping the girl didn't mind. To emily asking that question was simple and easy, it was a simle question almost like what's you name. To the yong gryffindor blood type or status didn't matter. She was sure that was what had stopped her being placed in slytherin until she met leighton.

"so how do you like hogwarts so far?" she asked her fellow gryffindor.

Hester was glad that the topic had moved away from her personal life.

"It's great," she said, happily. I was a bit nervous at first, but I've made some friends, joined some classes, and I'm lucky that I remember things quite easily." She laughed. "I guess some people would be surprised at how quickly I've been learning, but I just seem to soak up books." She paused. Then: "How do you like it? I guess you knew what to expect?"

Emily smiled she could tell the girl seemend a bit more comfortable now. She nodded at what she said.
"why would they be suprised, even some of the purebloods didn't know any magic before thye came here. Everyone starts off on the same level not knowing anything about magic unless there parents had taught them. Personally I only knew about transfiguration because of my aunt." she said hoping htat her reply had made sense.

"I sorat knew what to expect but it's more than i could have imagined, so much better. It's pretty big though and so easy to get lost"

"I guess what I mean is a lot of the other kids from - muggle- backgrounds," she stumbled over the word, she still wasn't quite used to it yet, "they don't seem to remember that much from the text books." She shrugged. "Just what I've seen. And the purebloods spout answers off the top of their heads without batting an eyelid."

She shrugged again. "I don't know. I guess it's not just about background, it's about how much you wanna learn."

She hoped she didn't sound above herself, she was just trying to voice her opinion and yet it seemed to come out wrong.

Emily nodded. "exactly some of the ones brought up in the wiarding world hav no idea what there on about they just seem to open their mouth and speak. I only know alot because I wnat to learn so I read all the texbooks." Emily didn't wnat to admit that but she didn't mind saying it to hester.

"so what classes are you taking?" she asked a little curious she had seen Hester in a few of her classes but not all of them.

Hester pulled her timetable out of her bag.
"Astronomy, divination, transfiguration, ancient runes, muggle studies, history of magic, charms, defence against the dark arts, potions, care of magical creatures, herbology and flying," she listed. "What about you?"

She recognised Emily from at least one of her classes, but she couldn't remember which. There were so many classes and people, it was a little overwhelming.

Emily nodded and reaplied, "I took transfiguration, histroy of magic, charms, defense against the dark arts, care of magical creatures and herbology." she replied supprised that hester was in all her classes. She had only seen the girl a few times, it just showed how unobservant she was.

Emily looked around it was quiet and still down at the lake, it was really nice and peaceful just sitting there.

Hester thought tried to remember. She had definitely spotted Emily in some of those classes, and the others ones would just be her being unobservant. She was like that sometimes.

"How are you liking them so far?" she asked. "Some of the stuff is really hard..."

She gazed at the water, and tried to view it as just a pleasant view, but something inside of her couldn't, and she returned her gaze to the grass at her feet.

Ellen had been walking about when she saw two girl sitting by the lake. She decided that it was time she got to know some people. She didn't want to interupt themor anything but she didn't think about as she slwoly walked over to them. She noticed that one of them was a gryffindor but she wasn't sure about the other. She hoped they wouldn't judge her for being a slytherin.

"hi do you mind if i join you?" she asked them smiling a little, hoping she wasn't interupting them or anything.

She smiled at Hester ""yeah there okay so far a few things have confused me a bit" she grinned. She jmped a little at another voice. She looked up to see a slytherin girl standing there.
"hi I'm Emily Sparrow" she said to her.
"i don't mind" she said indictaing for the girl to sit. She looked at Hester just incase she had any objections. She knew how some gryffindors felt about slytherins. Afterall they were meant to hate each other.

Hester looked up, surprised to hear another voice.

"Hey," she said. "Sure you can. I'm Hester. What's your name?"

She smiled, trying to be friendly. It wasn't too hard; she was normally friendly. She had just been taken by surprise. She looked over at Emily, hoping that the other Gryffindor wouldn't mind this addition to their conversation.

She looked back at the new girl. Her uniform robes were edged with green, and, if she could remember rightly, green was the colour of Slytherin. She didn't know much about the houses yet, but she did know that there was some grudge between Slytherin and Gryffindor. She hoped that the girl hadn't come just to be mean.

Ellen smiled and sat down "it's nice to meet you Emily and Hester. I'm Ellen" she replied smiling at them.

She noticed that the other girl, Hester also had gryffindor robes on. Neither seemened to be bother that she was a slytherin and they were sure to have noticed by now. It was just her luck the first peoples she meets are gryffindors. But it didn't bother her aslong as they didn't mind.

She twirled a strand of her vibrant red hair round her finger cautiously. She looked at the girl who called herself Emily she was sure she had heard the name sparrow before, but she wasn't sure where.

Hester smiled at Ellen. She seemed nice for a Slytherin, although the only Slyth she had met so far was that Japanese kid, Kaoru, who seemed a bit odd. She wondered if the stuff about Gryffindors and Slytherins not getting on was just a myth. She didn't know much about it all after all.

"We were just talking about what classes we've taken," she said. "Which ones have you signed up for?"

Ellen smiled back at the two girls. The both seemened nice eough and she wondered if they were both muggleborn's. They didn't appear at all bothered by the fact she wa sa lsyteirn. She knew most pureblood family's brought up there children for them to hate sltyehrins or gryffindors, depending. She wasn't gooing to ask about blood though she knew that would only make them think of her as more of a slytherin stero type.

"I'm taking History of Magic, transfiguration, care of mgical creatures, Astronomy and Divination. What about you two?" she asked them.

"Astronomy, divination, transfiguration, ancient runes, muggle studies, history of magic, charms, defence against the dark arts, potions, care of magical creatures, herbology and flying," said Hester, repeating everything that she had said before. She double checked her timetable to see if she had missed anything, but she hadn't.

"You're in some of my classes," she said happily.

" transfiguration, histroy of magic, charms, defense against the dark arts, care of magical creatures and herbology." she replied. Another one who was in a few of her classes. The gyrffindor had seen the slytherin once or twice in her classes.

"so Ellen how do you find hogwarts? I guess you sorta knew what to expect?" she asked her. "I did but it's much better than i ever could have dreamened. She knew that if the girl had made slytherin she was likely to be pureblood and she was sure she had heard the name fairwell before she just couldn't quiet rememeber where exactly.

Ellen smiled at both there answers she realised they were in afew of her classes but she hadn't noticed. Which wasn't supprising. The younge slytherin had been keeping herself to herself since she arrived at hogwarts.

"I knew what to expect yes. My brother told me all about it but it's better than i could have imagined" she replied. "pureblood then?" she asked emily,

She turned to Hester to include her aswell. "so how do you find hogwarts hester?" she asked her.

"It's... big," Hester said to Ellen. "Really big..." She smiled. "Good, though. And friendly. I really didn't know what to expect, but I like it."

She smiled and fiddled about with the blades of grass beneath her. The sun was warm, and she gazed at the lake happily. So long as she wasn't in it, she was happy.

She was almost off in a daydream until one of the others spoke again.

Emily listened to what ellen said. "yeah I am a pureblood" she replied quietly she was't proud of what she was, she hated being a pureblood. She felt happy sitting ther eby the lake with the gryffindor and the lsytherin. It was peaceful and warm and she feel off into her own world. She started across the lake in her own day dream, she zoned out a lot. She smiled a little to herself. Hogwarts had been really amazing. She couldn'twait till second year to start at the begining and learn new speels but more importantly to come back to here. She wondered why Ellen had spoken to them she was after all a slytherin but maybe the slytherin weren't so bad after all. She had been brought up believeing that gryffindor and slytherins should hate each other but maybe it was some stupid thing that should be stopped. Slytherin were just as nice as anybody else.
