.Personal History.
He didn't get along with his family, his brothers always out smarting him and stealing the limelight, his parents were constantly disappointed and always praised his brothers. He was often ignored which in the end he didn't mind, he could do what he liked and his parents gave up caring to notice him.
Robert was lazy in school and although he could have done well like his brothers, he couldn't be bothered and didn't do well enough to get any decent OWLS or NEWTS to get him into a job. He cut off all connections with his families after he turned sixteen and spent the final two years at Hogwarts moving from place to place, pub to pub, often finding himself living on the streets if needed. It was here that he gained some friends but in the same time some enemies, he learned to fend for himself, stealing and pick pocketing off the rich snobs that would walk past him as if he was invisible.
He bounced from job to job, mainly bar work and simple menial tasks, that paid poorly but got him by, he was always able to acquire extra cash if it was necessary. He grew up learning to rely only on himself and so has no real close friends, just acquaintances, people who had skills or trades that he would need.
After getting into some trouble in his younger years on the streets, he was told that to protect him he would have to work at Hogwarts, but with no qualifications the only thing they would allow him to do was work as the caretaker and grounds keeper. He begrudgingly took the job knowing that it was necessary, and although it meant that he was surrounded by kids all the time, he wouldn't have to interact with them that much and it meant a stable consistent job that paid well and also provided him with a sheltering roof over his head.
